A vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood commercial center started as an abandoned commercial property in northeast Portland, OR. Its primary tenant, a 36,000 SF natural food store is surrounded by 14,500 SF of retail and office space as well as a branch of the public library. The centerpiece of the complex is the double height sky lit Market Hall entry. The second level includes neighborhood services such as a hair salon and spa, and offices for professional services. The exterior design was carefully considered to be respectful of its residential surroundings--to reflect a northwest character and to respond to changing demographics. The new landscape incorporates native regional plantings of grasses, shrubs and trees in a natural context. This project received an Honor Award for the IIDA/AIA/ASID for its interior design.
